My family owned and lived above a small drug store in North Philadelphia and I was exposed to the medical field at a young age. When I was not working behind the soda fountain (and eating the profits), I was with my father in his “lab” – watching him compound prescriptions and asking him what they were used for. I also heard his customers call him Doc and ask his help in removing splinters from their fingers or specks from their eyes.
I was exposed to the neighborhood general practitioners and saw the way they got to know their patients and their families. I have sought to practice medicine in a way that would honor him and those doctors.
